Australians have won world acclaim for their
generosity in volunteering and yet, as one
wise per son wrote, "Good news never made
a paper sell." Often we simply don't hear
the stories of good people offering their time
and energy to do good things for other s.
One ex tr aordinar y way in which good
people do good things is through Radio
2RPH -- a r adio station providing a unique
reading ser vice for the vision-impaired,
physically handicapped, children or just
people who ar e too busy to buy a paper.
Tucked away in Sydney, though streamed
live on the internet, Facebook and other
technological accoutrements, the entir e
station oper ates smoothly and efficiently,
seven days a week, with only three
employees, two full-time and one
par t-time, and 230 volunteer s.
Volunteer s are on-air reading newspapers,
magazines, stories, children's stories and
a whole variety of newswor thy ar ticles,
every day. They are rostered on-air and
off-air, assessing auditions for reading,
trawling through magazine ar ticles and
taking care of administration and other
ta sks associated with keeping a radio
Readers ar e selected for their
pronunciation, their tone and their
'presence'; that is, how the listeners 'feel'
about that per son. While there is some
interaction with listener s, about 100,000
according to the 2012 sur vey, Radio
Station 2RPH would love to hear from
listeners about infor mation they would
like sourced or how the station could best
ser ve them. In this way, manager s can
include in their planning par ticular topical
issues such as the National Disability
This unique radio station oper ates with
some gover nment funding but also
depends heavily on donations, both
corpor ate and per sonal. For sur veys ,
they join with other stations in order to
conser ve costs.
The station has an Outreach Program
Officer for the Hunter who has "eyes
wide open" for topical events. There are
also two well-known 2RPH ambassador s :
Catherine Mahony and Mel Schlaeger.
On air, you will hear The Newcastle
Herald being read, a s well as other major
newspapers. Books, including childr en's
books , are read daily, as well as ar ticles
from some for ty popular magazines a
week. It's an eclectic and comprehensive
r ange of reading targeted at all ages, both
gender s and all nationalities. Fr equently,
people wanting to improve their English
sit with the paper at home and read along
with the on-air reader.
The station has been in existence for just
on 31 year s and clearly fills an impor tant
niche in our community. Of cour se, the
station always needs more volunteer s
and Managing Director, Nicci Lindemann,
said she is happy for people to contact
her to ar range inter views . Mona Omar is
the Hunter's Project Officer and she, too,
would love to hear from people of the
Hunter region on matters
of local inter est.
