KATRINA TIERNEY LIVING LIFE TO THE FULL WITH
Brian and Malcolm are two friends who live in a house full
of laughter and life. They live like any other friends. The only
difference is that they live in Supported Accommodation
At CatholicCare we believe in suppor ting people
to 'have life and have it to the full'. Our suppor ted
accommodation does that. We believe in suppor ting
people with disability to lear n skills they are interested in
and that will assist them in living the life they want.
Brian is a fun and happy guy. He loves living with his
friends and says there's nowhere else he would want to
A typical week for Brian includes work, socialising and
exercising. Brian sings and dances two nights a week and
spends Wednesdays exercising at the local community
hall. On the weekend Brian enjoys bowling, going to
the movies or watching the Newcastle Pro Wrestling.
Brian leads a social life that is the envy of many of
CatholicCare's support staff.
When asked, Brian says family and friends are the most
impor tant thing to him. Brian spends time with his
brother each week and every Friday afternoon you can
find Brian waiting at the front door to see his brother 's
car coming around the cor ner.
Malcolm has a passion for creating ar t. His bedroom
could be described as an ar t galler y which he proudly
shows off to anyone who comes to visit. Those who
do visit Malcolm know it's never a quick call. He loves to
shar e his ar t and proudly shows off photos of his family
and friends -- of whom he has many.
Malcolm describes his home a s a "holiday house" where
he gets meals from the "best cook in the whole world"
and he says, "I don't ever want to leave."
We a sked Malcolm what his favourite thing about
living with CatholicCare was. Malcolm r esponded that
"having my own bedroom" was a real highlight. Although
Malcolm loves spending time with his friends, it's
impor tant to him to have personal space where he can
get some rest and relaxation.
It's this tailored and unique approach to suppor ting the
people who choose to live with us that's centr al to our
approach at CatholicCar e. We all strive for a life full of
quality, and Brian and Malcolm are no exception.
