they have a mutual story to tell, a story that
hovers in the space between the two flags.”
(“Once upon a time”, SMH, 7-8 June).
The idea of what has been termed
'marriage equality' is very much on the
national agenda, a topic of conversation
and debate. I urge you to read a typically
insightful opinion piece by our regular
contributor, Michael O’Connor. Whatever
your view, I believe you will be enriched by
consider ing Michael’s per spective.
You will be similarly enriched by get ting to
know Fr George Anthicadu, administrator
of the parishes of Taree and Wingham, in
this month’s “One by One”. Fr George’s
love for his people and his priesthood
shines through and while he has a heavy
responsibility, he wears it lightly.
His story reminds me of a piece I read
recently in which Larissa Behrendt writes
of Aboriginal Australians, “...there are ties
that are deeper than blood and...lightness
of spirit is the measure of happiness.”
(“Happiness born of connectedness
lifts up Aboriginal Australians”
May you enjoy lightness of spirit this month.

For the last two editions of Aurora, Joanne
Isaac has been Acting Editor while I enjoyed
a long period of leave. I can honestly say I
looked forward to returning to my work,
and on doing so, I was delighted with the
editions published in my absence. I had not
a scintilla of doubt that all would be well,
and it was such a treat to read two editions
without knowing what was on each page!
In June, Emma Blackford told us, “There’s
no s topping Jacob”. Jacob Moore of St
Catherine’s Catholic College, Singleton,
is living with a rare brain cancer but is
“determined to make the most of every
situation”. Jacob’s dream is to establish his
own Brahman stud in the Hunter.
Fast forward to July, and Lee Sullivan told
of St Joseph’s Primary School’s innovative
“shared table” at Gloucester. In checking
some background details with parent
volunteer, Shayne Gardiner, Joanne Isaac
discovered that the Gardiners had a
Brahman stud. She thought to put Jacob
and Shayne in touch; see a snapshot on
Jo’s last editorial was titled “Only connect”
and it’s so very satisfying when Aurora can
connect like-minded people who would
otherwise not encounter each other.
I ver y much enjoyed get ting to know Peter
Bogan, a man with many stories to tell.
The April ‘super storm’ reminded locals of
earlier flood experiences, notably “the ‘55”.
I grew up knowing the term as shorthand
for a great deal of suffering and anxiety.
Peter wants his recollections recorded –
before it’s too late. As Australian writer
Carmel Bird wrote las t year, “There’s the
old culture and the young culture – and
