"IWAS DREADFULLY unfit, horribly
overweight, way out of condition, blood
pressure going through the roof. At a visit
to the doctor he casually informed me
that the way I was going, I'd be lucky to
make 40. He said I should organise life
insurance and have my affairs in order so
that my family would be taken care of after
I was gone. I was horrified by the idea."
New Lambton resident Mr Michael Tully
now owns and operates a personal
training studio and regularly competes in

"It took me some time to get my head
around the idea but I then realised that
the lifestyle I was living - being a drinker
and a smoker - was gradually killing me.
So I looked for a lifestyle change, left the
real estate industry, started running, gave
cigarettes and alcohol away. The more I
got into running, the more I enjoyed it. I

What motivated or sustained you as you
made those changes?
Initially, it was the fear of not seeing my
daughters grow up. After that, it was
appreciating the far simpler things: a run,
time with the family or a client's success.
Before that, anything outside was just
What message do you want to convey
about exercise and fitness?
Exercise is the same as a job. One day's
good. One day's bad. You just have to
keep on doing it to reap the rewards.
Your favourite authors?
John Grisham and Jeffrey Archer. I like
Jeffrey Archer because he writes family
sagas. I like John Grisham's novels
because they're clever, thought provoking.
They have a twist in the plots that you
can't see coming.
An address you'd like to try on for size?
Paris. My wife, Stephanie, and I have been
there a number of times. It has a feel all
of its own. You couldn't be anywhere else
in the world.
A childhood memory that brings a smile?
Christmas. It always began with Midnight
Mass, getting home and struggling
to sleep because Santa was coming.
Christmas morning was always opening
presents before visiting our grandparents.
As a parent of young daughters, what
most concerns you about society?
My wife and I often talk about what they'll
have to face, what life will be like for
them in 20 or 30 years: from housing
affordability, to the state of the economy,
to global warming. We worry about the
changes they will have to face as society
becomes more secular. We try and get
our daughters to think about just how
self-involved people are becoming and
encourage them not to follow that path.
What gives you hope?
I have faith in my daughters and their
friends. They have social consciences.
They question everything from politics to
environmental policies. They are prepared
to speak their minds but they have a
level of respect that I haven't seen in a
How would you like to be remembered?
As I'm never going to die, it won't really
matter. My father and I made a pact many
years ago. Neither of us are going to go.
We're going to turn up at the Pearly Gates
and say to St Peter: "I'm terribly sorry but
I'm not interested at this point in time so
send me back!"
Seriously, I'd like to be remembered as
someone who put others first.

menALIVE program coming
WHAT IS IT to be fully alive?
According to St. Ireneaus "God
is glorified when men are fully alive..."
but Newcastle men can find out for
themselves when the 'menALIVE'
retreat team comes to Wallsend/
Shortland Parish on the weekend of
25-26 June. And they'll be in safe
hands - the menALIVE team has run
more than 75 events in 18 dioceses
throughout Australia and New Zealand
engaging with more than 5000 men.
Robert Falzon and Peter Shakhovskoy,
together with other lay men, began
'menALIVE' in Brisbane in 2003. These
men had experienced something
powerful within the Church and wanted
to share this with other men. They knew
that men have little opportunity (and
sometimes less inclination) to share
their faith with other men, but they
didn't doubt that it was tremendously
rewarding to do so. Every retreat has
seen men enriched in their roles as
fathers, brothers and sons; men
rediscovering their role in the Church,
the strength of their fellowship and the
joys and sorrows of shared experience.
It is not an easy task being a Christian
man in modern Australia but attempting
to do so alone makes it next to
impossible. Unquestionably, fellowship
is what Christ intended for us.
The 'menALIVE' program has been
