Newcastle No Interest Loans Scheme - a
'good work' of the St Vincent de Paul Society
and the Sisters of St Joseph Lochinvar -
provides eligible low income individuals
and families the opportunity to purchase
essentials -- white goods, furniture,
appliances -- while avoiding the long-term
added cost burden. Newcastle NILS is one
of five such schemes operating locally.

NILS, highlights the affordability of the
scheme for the poorest, but is even more
enthusiastic that it allows them to take
control and work at achievable goals. "It
isn't a handout," says Brooke. "It is a loan
agreement that we can demonstrate can be
paid back by regular instalments. A typical
first loan is $900 paid back at $30 per
fortnight. When fully repaid, another loan
can be applied for. We have some now on
their fourth or fifth loan. They have a sense
of achievement you can't get from a

NILS has allowed her to purchase a
replacement for her antiquated TV, her
primary source of entertainment. Lee has
successfully repaid a second loan for a
computer which she says has given her
