Méabh and Stephen
Nash are ready to
celebrate St Patrick's
Day; see story on
of Priscilla Scanlon.
"Our people, our stories"
Christian churches are observing the season of Lent, which
began with the distribution of ashes on Ash Wednesday.
Traditionally a time of 'giving up', Lent is now just as likely
to be a time of 'taking up' --- forgiveness, some time for
prayer and contemplation, thinking before speaking. Implicit
in Lenten observance I believe is the gospel maxim, "When
you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right
is doing, so that your almsgiving may be secret." (Mt 6:3)
In a world where acclamation and acknowledgement are
ubiquitous, this element can be more challenging than the
form of 'almsgiving' you choose!
I love our St Patrick's Day cover and hope you will enjoy
'meeting' Patrick Stephen Nash on page 10. In the midst of
Lent where it always falls, St Paddy's Day is a burst of colour
and an opportunity to celebrate and enjoy all things Irish.
It was good to hear from Adamstown Uniting Church's Rev
Rod Pattenden who wrote, "Congratulations on a great edition
of Aurora! I am new to Newcastle and this seems a great
window into the church, faith and justice -- well done."
Lorraine Cowling of Rankin Park wrote, "I loved the article
about Georgia Talbot. She is lucky to have such amazing
parents and siblings as well as the wonderful support she
gets at school." If you missed this story, you may like to read it
online at www.mn.catholic.org.au/aurora
At the time of writing the conclave is yet to begin but by the
next edition, the world's estimated 1.2 billion Catholics will
have a new leader and a new era will have begun. This month
members of our community have offered their hopes for the
next papacy, a more gratifying exercise than punting on the
Andrew Hamilton SJ has wonderful observations about the
truism, "Catholics believe that the Pope is chosen by the
Holy Spirit." He reminds us that, "The Spirit is wild. It drives
prophets to speak against anointed kings...leads Jesus into
the desert to confront Satan, picks Philip up by the hair and
puts him into a slow chariot with the Ethiopian ambassador,
shocks devout Jewish followers of Jesus with the possibility
God may be calling the uncircumcised, makes Paul abandon
his prudent missionary strategy and go straight for Europe.
The Spirit works within the ordinary processes of the Church,
but is never confined or controlled by them."
May the Spirit run wild!
