HSC brings out

A ceremony at the Catholic Schools Office
not only provided an opportunity for the
young women who attained the highest
ATARs (Australian Tertiary Assessment
Rank) in the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-
Newcastle to be recognised and rewarded.
It also allowed diocesan "Dux", Belinda
Serafin, to recognise, in turn, those
who contributed to her success, from
Kindergarten to Year 12.
Belinda, who attended St Francis Xavier's
Primary Belmont, St Mary's High School
Gateshead and St Francis Xavier's College
Hamilton, gained an ATAR of 99.4. Her
classmates at St Francis Xavier's, Mickaela
Mate (99.25) and Maighan Hassett (98.95)
were the 'top three' across diocesan
Commemorative plaques were presented
to the three scholars by Director of Schools
Ray Collins, in the presence of their proud
parents and principals of all 55 diocesan
'Dux' Belinda Serafin reflected on her school
career with maturity and insight.
"Having cried to my Mum upon leaving her
every morning of every day in Kindergarten,
I don't think Mum or Dad ever thought I
would enjoy school, let alone do well. But,
as Year One and the other cherished years
of primary school followed, the crying
stopped and was replaced by enthusiasm
"In Years 7-10 I found some inner drive to
achieve high results academically as well
as through other social and community
"Setting the goal at the beginning of Years
11 and 12 to focus on study and really
give it my best shot, was the source of my
determination to do well. It was the effort
I put in, rather than natural talent, that
allowed me to reach a potential I could
never have imagined. It is also an extremely
important aspect of Catholic education
to be involved in the social and cultural
opportunities during high school. These
opportunities, such as the St Vincent de
Paul Society and sporting groups, brought
a balance to school life and can be as
fulfilling as academic success.
"The HSC can often be looked at in a
negative light, especially when you're in
the middle of it, but in hindsight I see that it
actually brought out the best in me."
Belinda concluded her words in prayer for
others: "Bless every principal and teacher
who has, through their genuine care and
sharing of knowledge, blessed so many
Assistant Director of Schools Gerard
Mowbray said, "The ceremony allowed us
to celebrate our students in a fitting manner
and Belinda's words captured what we
strive for in Catholic schools."
