"Our people, our stories"
Preparing this edition, I have been conscious of the times in
which we -- the local Catholic community -- are living and I feel
this is reflected in the pages of Aurora. It may well seem the
worst of times, and I agree with Fr Michael Kelly SJ, who said at
a diocesan event recently, quoting Bishop Geoffrey Robinson,
"Let the process of investigation and correction end where it
I particularly urge you to read a strong message from Bishop Bill
Wright, which acknowledges, and expresses sorrow for, wrongs
done in this diocese. Please turn to page 5.
Fr Michael wrote for Aurora last month and you can read his
address from the Social Justice Council event at
This month, Bishop Geoff Robinson has written for Aurora
and I have no doubt you will find his plea, on page 15, thought
I am excited that renowned Australian writer, John Marsden, has
written exclusively for Aurora, sharing something of his practices
in encouraging his children to enjoy reading. I have witnessed
John, a school principal, engaging effectively with young people
and you will gain an insight into his ability to communicate
wisdom when you read his contribution on page 6.
This month Aurora flags an innovative way of examining
the place of Facebook and other social media in our lives.
Following an invitation in our diocesan e-bulletin, three families
have signed up to participate in a Facebook Fast. Meet these
brave souls this month, and next month we will report on their
experience. You might like to fast informally in solidarity!
Fr Terry Horne of Blackbutt North Parish wrote on the subject
of Facebook, "It is true that some have used Facebook in
destructive ways and that's a real shame. However, I like to think
that there is some potential for its use in a worthwhile way, by
adults and parishes who are interested in communicating ideas
and information to others.
"We at facebook.com/holytrinityparishblackbuttnorth have a
largely young membership but would dearly like to attract older
internet users and parents of school-age children, to exchange
ideas and, well, just connect with them. Who knows, it may
prove to be a means of evangelisation!" Perhaps readers may
like to connect with Fr Terry via Facebook?
A number of correspondents expressed gratitude for Joanne
Isaac's generous sharing of her family's story of the loss of
husband and father, Trevor, in the June edition. Jen Valentine of
Charlestown wrote, "I really appreciate the honesty in Joanne's
articles. There has rarely been one that has not moved me."
Aurora is indeed fortunate to have a writer of Joanne's calibre
Your thoughts and ideas are always welcome.
