Home' Aurora : Aurora October 2013 Contents Writing recently in Eureka Street, Andrew
Hamilton SJ invoked Pope Francis'
style of communication as a model for
religious media. "...the Pope's style of
communication appears to come from
his own comfort at recognising himself
as sinful and fallible and yet called to
follow Jesus Christ. That makes him also
comfortable in acknowledging scandals in
the Church without having to defend them.
He is then free cheerfully to preach the
Gospel to the poor."
Drawing from his observations about the
Pope, Hamilton makes a series of very
specific suggestions about the role of
Catholic media. "Catholic media should
report the bad news about sexual abuse
and failures of governance. In its coverage
it should focus on giving voices and faces
to those who have been hurt. It should
also encourage its readers to go out into
the world in an exploratory and not a
defensive way....those who try to save
their reputation lose it, while those who are
happy to lose their reputation in the service
of the Gospel may save it."
Aurora remains unique among Australian
religious media and its approach echoes
That approach was rewarded recently
at annual award ceremonies of the
Australasian Catholic Press Association
(ACPA) and the Australasian Religious
On both occasions, Aurora was named
Best Regional Publication. One judge
wrote, "Aurora admirably achieves its
worthwhile objective of being both Catholic
and catholic....content and production
have a professional flair. Clean, uncluttered
covers feature a stunning masthead,
good use of leading images ....Aurora
encourages the faithful and exercises a
bold witness to the general public."
Bishop Bill Wright's column was highly
commended, with a judge writing, "...Bill
Wright tackles two of the biggest issues of
the past year -- paedophilia and the papacy.
His success is to bring an authentic sense
of rumination and invitation....Bishop
Wright never loses his warmth, quiet
authority and accessibility. He invests
his personal experience or observations
without becoming indulgent....and one is
left at the end of each column with that
quiet moment of contemplation."
Aurora was named winner for Best Mission
Coverage, for Judi McLean's "A forgotten
community provides visitors with a real
lesson" (November 2012)....the story of a
challenging immersion...by school students
into an Aboriginal community. The article
sensitively expressed the range of reactions
and responses to this experience."
Finally, Aurora was highly commended for
Best Layout and Design: "Aurora was one
of the most distinctive magazines within
the category, standing out for its creativity
and playfulness ... interesting use of
images....good photography, use of colour,
breakout boxes and other design elements
made Aurora our choice."
As editor, I am deeply grateful to all who
contribute to Aurora's success, particularly
the members of the voluntary editorial
and proofreading teams, the designers at
New Media and Client Services and the
diocesan Communications Team.
