"Our people, our stories"
Spring is a fleeting memory, summer has arrived with a
vengeance. Last month I invited readers to contribute vignettes
of the way in which you and your family 'keep Christmas'. Do
you, or does your immediate or extended family, observe a
particular Christmas ritual or have a special way of celebrating?
Maybe you remember 'absent friends' ritually, or give some
time and energy to a community group? There's still time to
send your story, and in the interests of full disclosure, that's
code for 'I'm disappointed not to have received more stories'!
Please submit by 15 November.
It's always good to hear from readers and I was delighted
when Jill Garner of Koolewong wrote: "On the eve of my 77th
birthday, this is my first fan letter! The October Aurora is simply
outstanding. Every page had quality writing that grabbed my
attention and kept it....The cover, with Sisters in silent witness
to refugees and the harbour background -- a mini-sermon.
"Each evening I say this prayer before retiring: 'Lord, no one is
a stranger to you and no one is ever far from your loving care.
In your kindness watch our refugees and asylum seekers.
Those separated from their loved ones, those who are lost
and those who have been exiled from their homes. Bring them
safely to the place where they long to be and help us always to
show your kindness to strangers and those in need.' (Opening
Prayer, Mass for Refugees and Exiles)".
Those of you who are pray-ers may like to join Jill in prayer.
Zeny Giles of Newcastle Christians for Peace indicated that
members plan to join the Thursday evening vigil at Queens
Wharf from 5-6pm until Christmas. You would be welcome too.
The month of November is a time for remembering, in prayer
and ritual, those who have died. In this month's edition is a
number of stories with a 'remembering' theme, including a
new dimension to family trees in 'Seasons of Grace' on page
16. Read about a creative project which remembers the lives
of those who have died by suicide but even more importantly,
encourages the conversations that can be so difficult. Please
turn to page 12.
Fr Frank Brennan SJ features on page 5 and I was privileged
to interview him at his home in Canberra. A longer version of
my story appears on the diocesan website for those who have
more time to spend with this National Living Treasure.
For those forward planners who are thinking about Christmas,

If you have a view to express arising from an Aurora story,
please write a letter to the editor.
