BEING ORGANISED AND
Director of Schools in the Catholic
Diocese of Maitland-Newca stle, Ray
Collins, has congratulated students
achieving outstanding results in the 2013
Higher School Cer tificate. Mr Collins also
acknowledged the effor ts of all students
of Catholic schools, their teacher s, parents
and family members.
"The HSC students of 2013, across each
of our Catholic senior secondary schools,
should be ex tremely proud of their
effor ts this year and I congratulate all in
the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle who
achieved their HSC .
"In par ticular, I congr atulate St Fr ancis
Xavier's student, Jordan Velich, who
achieved an ATAR of 99.9, and St Paul's
Booragul student, Karolina Leszc zynski,
who came 1st in the state in Polish which
she studied at Randwick Saturday School.
Karolina also came equal first in the
diocese in Studies of Religion 1."
Dux of the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle
2013, Jordan Velich, wa s naturally delighted
with his result. "Knowing the hard work
throughout the year had paid off and
knowing I was capable of those marks
were both ver y satisfying," he said.
Jordan will be pursuing a combined degree
in Mathematics and Science at Newcastle
Univer sity this year. "I don't have a career
in mind yet and I'm not quite sure what
the future holds for me, so I'm choosing to
stick with my interests and see where they
Reflecting on his final year s of schooling,
Jordan said, "I thought 'SFX' had a strong
sense of community spirit and if you
needed help, it wa s freely available. All the
teacher s wer e suppor tive and encour aging
of their students and I had a great group
of friends which made it more enjoyable
Two students in the Diocese of Maitland-
Newcastle appear ed on the state's 'Top
Achiever s list': St Joseph's High School
Aberdeen student, Amber Creighton, was
placed sixth in the state in Retail Ser vices
and St Francis Xavier's student, Aaron
Benjamin Ting, achieved six th place in
Software Design and Development.
Ther e were also two St Fr ancis Xavier's
College students on the 'All Rounders list',
Jessica Blunt and again, Jordan Velich.
"Completing the HSC, and indeed
waiting for the results, can be a stressful
time for students but it is a wonderful
accomplishment and I encour age each
and every one of our students, no matter
what their result, to be ex tremely proud of
themselves," said Mr Collins.
I asked Jordan if he had any 'secrets to
success', and his answer might assist cur rent
Year 12 students.
"I don't know of any secrets, but being
organised, well prepared and keeping on
top of your summaries makes it much
easier, and you tend to stress less as well.
Also, keeping a positive fr ame of mind
goes a long way, whether by hanging
with friends and family or enjoying your
favourite movie. Something to give you
a break from the books and relax is very
