Red Cross is arguably one of the most
recognisable and respected international
charities. Tracey Edstein repor ts on its
upcoming Australian centenar y celebration.
A bir thday's hardly a bir thday without a
cake, and if all goes to plan, Austr alian
Red Cross shops from Bowen to Bur nie,
Broken Hill to Broome will be supporting
the baking of many, many cakes to
celebrate the approaching centenar y of
Austr alian Red Cross.
Editorial and Food Director of the familiar
Australian Women's Weekly (AWW)
cookbooks, Pamela Clark, came up
with the idea of rounding up pr e-loved
copies of the AWW cookbooks and
donating them to Red Cross shops.
Complementing the cookbooks will be
items of wonder ful '50s kitchenalia, so
members of the community are invited
to rifle through cupboards and sheds and
donate cookbooks and kitchen kitsch to
the nearest Red Cross shop.
The r esulting window displays will
promote the centenary, and most
impor tantly, highlight the significant work
of Austr alian Red Cross over the last

celebrations is the Red Cross Big Cake
Bake, happening throughout August.
Big Cake Bake invites friends, families,
colleagues and neighbour s to enjoy baking
and sharing cakes, slices, pies, cupcakes,
biscuits or desser ts and r aising funds for
Red Cross. Events can include mor ning
or after noon tea , a cake stall or a baking
competition. The official event date is
Monday, 25 August; however, events can
be held anytime in August.
Red Cross ha s been responding to
emergencies and providing humanitarian
assistance in Australia since 1914.
The organisation is committed to
strengthening and ex tending emergency
ser vices to assist all Austr alians prepare
for, respond to and recover from
emergencies. Red Cross came into being
at the initiative of Henry Dunant, who
helped wounded soldier s at the battle of
Solferino (Italy) in 1859 and then lobbied
political leader s to take more action to
protect war victims.
